Good-byes Bring New Beginnings!

This issue marks some exciting changes for Fabric Trends. First, we’ve expanded the new look from last issue’s cover into the pages of the magazine. We hope you’ll enjoy seeing the quilts in their natural habitats around the home as much as we enjoyed setting up the shots for the photographer. In addition to the styled quilt photos, the project pages themselves have had a makeover. Kudos to Managing Graphic Designer Rory Wexler for developing such a fresh, clean style. Check it out—I know you’ll love it!

From simple and bold to intricate and traditional, we’ve got the perfect quilt for you. In addition to fifteen great patterns, meet fabric designer Melissa Saylor, and learn how to transform scraps into fabric origami. Sara Moe shares her top ten embellishment techniques (complete with great photos!), and “20 Ways…” offers unique ideas for displaying quilts.

Vintage Vases
ByBetty New for Windham Fabrics

Imagine a quilt in Edgar Allen Poe’s sleeping chambers...or draped over a chair in Agatha Christie’s living room...that’s what L.B. Krueger visualized when she created the Mystery line for Windham Fabrics. The collection combines refined elegance with rich textural prints, trailing vines, swirling paisleys and ikat florals. Yet true to her eclectic sense of design, L.B. Krueger’s delicate florals and whimsical bees provide a sharp contrast, offering quilters the opportunity to infuse the more traditional look of stripes, plaids and florals with a gothic flair of suspense.

Midas Touch

Midas Touch
By Patti Carey for Northcott

Inspired by today's casual lifestyle, Northcott designer Ro Gregg created luxurious gilded paisleys with a whimsical look. Ro says, "I began with the master paisley, which is a relaxed design with the subtle sophistication of gold accents." The earthy colors of soft teal, and cinnamon mix well with brown, the new black. Robin’s egg blue and caramel help to complete the palette, making this collection popular for home decorators as well as quilters.

Shop Hoppin’ (a.k.a. A Quilter’s Road Trip)
By Kathy Brown for Troy Corp

Kathy Brown’s inspiration came from her memories of vacations as a child. “We took great vacations every summer. My dad had an old 8mm film camera to record everything, and I spent countless favorite family nights in front of our projector screen with a bowl of popcorn, my two brothers, mom, and dad watching these home movies of our trips. I thought how wonderful it would be to capture memories like that and put them on a quilted wallhanging that we could see and touch every day. Road Trip was born!”
