Black, White & Bright!

Black and white are perennial favorites in the world of high fashion, so it's no surprise that this stylish combo has become popular with home decorators as well! That is why we asked some of the manufacturers whose fabrics are featured in this issue to send us their latest black and white collections. From bold stripes to subtle florals, black is back and more beautiful than ever! Pair it with white alone for contrast (see Diamond Knot) or use it with a dose of red for added drama (see Escargots with Red Wine).

Our black and white theme also carries through to our special features. Please be sure to read Lisa Shepard Stewart's article on overdyeing fabric, as well as Kay M. Capps Cross' article about acquiring a black and white stash. You'll never look at black and white fabric in the same way again!

Great quilts demand equally great settings. Once we had our black and white quilts in hand, we asked the staff of Ethan Allen in Vestal, New York, if we could use the store's showroom, particularly the black and white room sets, as a backdrop for our quilts. I think you'll agree that the results are very dramatic!

For those of you who yearn for lots of color and traditional design, we also have a number of projects to inspire you. From exotic oriental motifs to soft floral prints, we've showcased a wide variety of fresh new fabrics.

In sum, we hope you'll enjoy this exciting new issue of Fabric Trends as much as we enjoyed putting it together. Thank you to all the fabric designers and manufacturers for their contributions and to the Ethan Allen staff for their help and expertise.

Windsong Rails

Windsong Rails
Quilt designed by Patti Carey for Northcott/Monarch
Windsong fabric designed by Ro Gregg

Simply magical! It looks as if sixteen different
fabrics were used to create the quilt center of this traditional Rail Fence bed quilt. Look again, however, and you'll see that only four fabrics were used. The secret? Gradated stripes! The quiltmaker just fussy cut 81/2" squares and sewed them together. All one has to do is quilt along the stripes to make them look pieced. It's that easy!

Diamond Knot

Diamond Knot
Quilt designed by Cathryn Tallman-Evans for Henry Glass & Co.
Blackwork, Redwork, Indigo Collection designed by Henry Glass Design Team

All the beauty of Blackwork embroidery was captured in a charming new fabric collection that includes paisleys, florals, and dots. Introduced to England by Catherine of Aragon (the first wife of Henry VIII), Blackwork as a needleart remained popular through Elizabethan times. Another Cathryn (Tallman-Evans) used the traditional Diamond Knot pattern to evoke the romance of Blackwork, but the setting used for the blocks gives the quilt a contemporary look.

Carolina Lights Fabric designed by Patti Brown for ALB Decorator Fabrics

Found in the most beautiful settings–along remote, rugged coastlines and beaches–they are some of the most historic and artistic structures to be found in the United States. Celebrate their uniqueness with beautiful limited edition lighthouse print fabric, designed by the quiltmaker herself!
